Manitou Springs High School is making a difference in the life of a child named Berkley by raising funds through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Berkley was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a severe heart defect that left the left side of her heart underdeveloped and unable to function without surgical intervention. She has endured four open-heart surgeries, each with complications, including a blood clotting disorder, stroke, feeding issues, a feeding tube, and developmental disabilities. Berkley underwent her first heart surgery at just five days old and her most recent one in July 2024 at the age of three and a half.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Berkley is full of joy and excitement—especially when it comes to Disney! For her wish, she chose to visit Disney World, where she hopes to meet all her favorite characters, especially Mickey and Moana. She recently started saying that when she grows up, she wants to be Mickey Mouse!
For Berkley and her family, this wish means so much more than just a trip. “This wish gives us something to look forward to outside of Berkley’s medical treatment. It also gives us a chance to experience something magical that has nothing to do with her heart condition. It gives Berkley a chance to have something extra special that has nothing to do with her medical needs. She gets to experience pure joy like any other child!”

These fundraising efforts were led by the Manitou Springs High School Student Council, demonstrating the power of student leadership and teamwork in making a meaningful impact. Their hard work and dedication have helped ensure that Berkley’s dream becomes a reality. Through various fundraising events such as bake sales, spirit nights, and donation drives, they have raised an incredible $4,825.77 to help grant Berkley and other children’s wishes. The effort has been met with overwhelming support, reflecting the strong sense of compassion and generosity within the Manitou Springs community.
