Manitou Springs High School is proud to
highlight the achievements and impact of Coach
Andy Sherwood, an outstanding coach and
dedicated mentor who has been transforming
student-athletes in cross-country and track for
over two decades. Joining the Manitou Springs
staff in 2021, Coach Sherwood brought with him
a wealth of experience, a profound dedication to
his athletes, and a transformative approach that
has led his teams to new heights.

Coaching Journey

Coach Sherwood’s career began in 2002, where he started a coaching path that would take him from Notre Dame High School in Chicago to Central Catholic High School in Portland, and eventually to collegiate coaching roles at Western Illinois University and the University of Portland. His journey is marked by a commitment to excellence and a clear vision for developing resilient and adaptable athletes.  A varsity letter winner himself in cross-country and track at the University of Portland, Coach Sherwood understands firsthand the discipline and dedication required to excel in these demanding sports. From 2003 to 2005, he served as a graduate assistant coach at Western Illinois University, where he earned a Master of Science in Physical Education. His diverse experiences across high school and collegiate programs have honed his ability to connect with student-athletes, motivating them to tap into their potential and achieve lasting success.

A Transformational Coaching Philosophy

Central to Coach Sherwood’s approach is his transformation coaching purpose statement:

“Ignite potential through the consistent work
and discipline of running – we cultivate
resilient, adaptable, and intrinsically motivated
student-athletes who are able to lead
effectively, embrace challenges, and create a
lasting legacy.”

This purpose-driven philosophy underscores his dedication to not only athletic development but also the holistic growth of each student-athlete. For Coach Sherwood, the track/trail is a place where young people learn resilience, discipline, and leadership— qualities that transcend sports and equip them for lifelong success.

2024 Cross Country Season

This year, Coach Sherwood’s leadership has propelled the cross-country team to a remarkable season. Coach Sherwood has built the program up to almost 30 student athletes. The girls’ team had an outstanding season becoming Tri-Peaks League Champions, Regional Champions, and
CHSAA 3A State runner up. The boys’ team took 3rd place at Regionals and both boys’ and girls’ teams qualified for the State Championship meet—an accomplishment that has not been achieved since 1997. This milestone reflects the dedication and consistent effort of Coach Sherwood, the coaching staff and his athletes. To top off an amazing season, Coach Sherwood has been recognized as the Tri-Peaks League Coach of the Year.

Coach Sherwood’s influence extends beyond training regimens and race strategies; his approach fosters a strong team culture, one where every athlete is encouraged to contribute to a legacy of excellence and resilience. His coaching has been instrumental in creating a community of
intrinsically motivated athletes who understand the value of hard work, adaptability, and unity.

As Manitou Springs celebrates the successes of its cross-country program, we are grateful for the dedication of Coach Sherwood, whose vision and transformative leadership continue to inspire our student-athletes, shaping them into leaders on and off the track.
